Investing in early-stage climate tech startups in Indonesia, in a market that has yet to price their value properly, is never an easy decision. For BLESS Indonesia, Angin Dampak Jaya’s journey to becoming Avantierra feels close to home because we have not only witnessed the transformation, but have continued to experiment alongside them. Through the collaboration between BLESS Indonesia, Koalisi Ekonomi Membumi (KEM), and Angin Dampak Jaya, we have explored different ways to bring leaders, impact-driven businesses, and resources together, including creating a safe-to-fail space to test new approaches to mobilising funding before taking them to a larger scale. As one of the system-change leaders in the BLESS: The Circle programme, Saskia Tjokro has been an important part of this journey.
For us, this shows how organisational transformation and leadership transformation often move together: having the courage to try, learning along the way, changing direction when needed, and staying anchored to the bigger purpose.
The name Avantierra feels fitting for the next chapter. Indonesia needs more than ideas for a new economy; it needs people and organisations capable of moving resources so that alternative economic models can truly grow. On the long journey toward transforming Indonesia’s economy by 2045 to become more socially and environmentally responsible, one of the greatest challenges is connecting capital, capacity, networks, and the courage to experiment with those building a more responsible economy for people and nature. We hope Avantierra will play an important role in this space: not only mobilising resources, but helping direct them toward those proving that a different way of building Indonesia’s economy is indeed possible.
