Indonesia holds some of the world’s largest nickel reserves, but mining strength alone does not guarantee a place further down the EV value chain. INTRA Institute maps the country’s critical minerals-to-EV value chain and examines where Indonesia’s dominance begins to fade. China and South Korea lead much of mineral processing, battery production, and EV manufacturing, while Indonesia faces regulatory uncertainty, slowing foreign investment, and responsible sourcing concerns tied to nickel operations in Sulawesi and Maluku. The report also examines policy gaps that leave the private sector outside key incentives, and what could help Indonesia move further up the EV value chain.
